Double Checking My Board and Batten plans Jake810 | Posted in General Questions on March 31, 2026 09:42pm I’ve attached an image of my plan for sheathing/siding my garage, and want to double check that I’m on the right track. Climate 4C (Portland, OR). Bottom of Wall shows my setup at the foundation. Zip sheathing taped, liquid flash, rain screen (cor-a-vent and firring), Z-flashing, then siding. Existing Wall in the image shows what’s there now. It’s a single siding layer acting as sheathing, over 2×4’s, tucked under blocking and rafters at birds mouth cuts. Top of Wall (A) shows ZIP sheathing tucked under rafters/blocking. Rain screen sits ~3/8″ beneath, with siding board and battens attached. Top of Wall (B) shows the addition of Z-flashing at the top, from under rafters and extending over board and batten. Though all is up for review, the top is where I’m wondering what to do. I’ve seen board-and-batten with simple metal channel at the top of the board, with exposed top edge on the battens. However, I’d like to cap everything — that seems better. But getting tape under those birds mouths to seal Z-flashing seems finnicky. What to do at the top? I don’t want to use a frieze trim board at the top over the cor-a-vent strip for battens to butt into, as I don’t love the look, but I will if that’s the best way. I’d still need flashing covering top siding edges though, right? Answer GBA Detail Library A collection of one thousand construction details organized by climate and ...
