Insulation question & air handler in the attic AJ_TN | Posted in General Questions on February 16, 2026 04:33pm Hello, I don’t know if this is the right place to ask these questions. I am a homeowner with no knowledge of construction and looking for advice. We recently bought a home in southern FL with air handler in the attic and fiberglass insulation. There is a mouse problem and we are thinking of removing all the insulation (which is quite old) then disinfecting the area before re-insulating. Our dilemma is to determine what its the best material – fiberglass or spray foam, or another option. We want to choose not only a green option but also one that is less toxic to our health as I understand spray foam releases VOCs. As for the air handler, we are wondering whether it makes sense to move it into the house or outside. And if it remains in the attic, does it pull air from the attic? We want to avoid getting mold from the attic into the home.  Our primary concerns are 1) health (use the least toxic materials and avoid mold in the circulated air & 2) energy efficiency. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated!AJ Answer GBA Detail Library A collection of one thousand construction details organized by climate and house part Search and download construction details Join the leading community of building science experts Become a GBA Prime member and get instant access to the latest developments in green building, research, and reports from the field.
