Low VOC structural adhesive options? AdamPNW | Posted in General Questions on April 5, 2026 03:38pm Hi all,My 2nd floor framing plan will likely require lots of structural adhesive. As part of an exposed timber frame floor I’ll be using it to build 2 and 3-ply joists, as well as to glue down the exposed 2x decking, and subfloor above that. Since these elements are exposed, I’d like to minimize any harmful VOC’s/toxicity, etc from the adhesive. Does anyone have experience specifying or using “green” adhesives in a structural capacity? Is LEED a pretty good standard for finding low toxicity adhesive, or is it just green washing? How much do I even need to rely on the adhesive anyway? For the subfloor I’m not too worried about adhesive strength, but for the built-up joists I’m guessing it’s more of a factor (in addition to using fastening schedules). I’ve noticed some brands report shear strength (this is what I’m relying on in the joists) some report tensile strength (this is a factor in the subfloor), and some manufacturers are LEED approved. Any idea what strength value I should look for? thanks!Adam Answer GBA Detail Library A collection of one thousand construction details organized by climate and house part Search and download construction details Join the leading community of building science experts Become a GBA Prime member and get instant access to the latest developments in green building, research, and reports from the field.
