Metal roofing 1inch screws, 2 have stripped out in the 1x4 strapping. Is it ok to put a longer screw down into the actual plywood sheathing?

Seems like the obvious fix but at the same time they went through a lot of trouble to avoid actually screwing into the sheathing. just wanted to see from roofers if doing this is considered a bad thing or what? cuz I've known many to do exactly that with no strapping. I thought the strapping serves the purpose of keeping condensation off your roof more so than anything else.
