My construction teacher is really confusing me with calculating stairs (no rise calculations)

A while ago I was struggling with calculating the length of a rafter, but then I got a construction calculator and with the rise/run/pitch functions I was getting perfect scores. The thing is, my teacher said he never used a construction calculator before. Now we're calculating the length of stairs and both in the calculator's instructions and guides I've seen on YouTube the first thing to input on the calculator is the "rise' function.
