  • Understanding local climate impacts insulation choices is crucial.

Nailbase insulation during re-roof? comm_supt | Posted in Green Building Techniques on February 19, 2026 07:16am The roof on our 1961 ranch (standard gable roof with asphalt shingles and plywood sheathing) in Climate Zone 5A is coming up on end-of-life soon and that would be the time to install insulation board on top during the rip+replace. The long-term goal being bringing the attic into the envelope for future equipment/storage. However, currently only the attic floor is insulated with blown-in from a previous MassSave visit (previous owner, along with exterior walls). If I do the above-deck rigid insulation (suitable thickness for Climate Zone 5A) during the re-roof and don’t get right to moving the interior insulation layer up to the rafter bays am I creating a problem? I have soffit vents and gable vents for some reason, but would plan to install a ridge vent during re-roof and close the gable vents.
