Should I try to use ERV exhaust for Heat Pump Hot Water Heater? coldClimateHouse | Posted in General Questions on April 8, 2026 04:01pm I have an ERV which is exhausting somewhat warm air to outside in winter. I am thinking about adding a HPWH. I am in a heating climate, zone 5 almost zone 6. In the summer, I’m fine with cooling and dehumidifying the basement w/ HPWH. In the winter, I don’t want to cool this unheated basement as we use it to some degree. I could add dampers and ductwork to seasonally send the ERV exhaust through the HPWH and rebalance the fan speeds. This is waste heat that the water heater could use.
