50-year concession wraps build, finance and operation of 1,100-bed campus overhaul
The long-term public-private partnership will see the team design, build, finance and operate new and refurbished halls across the Connaught and South Stoneham campuses over 50 years. Work will deliver 1,092 new student bed spaces by 2029 alongside the refurbishment of 399 existing rooms and restoration of the Grade II listed Stoneham House. The Aspire consortium brings together Hochtief PPP Solutions, Vinci Building, and Cityheart, with Vinci and Hochtief leading delivery. The scheme forms a key part of the university’s expansion plans to grow student numbers to 30,000 by 2031. Plans for the Wessex Lane campus overhaul are due to be submitted this week, with the project set to create three new residential communities within landscaped parkland. South Stoneham will form the centrepiece, featuring a new public square, while a redesigned quad at Connaught will boost student interaction and campus life. The project also includes upgrading halls at Archers Road and bringing Stoneham House back into use as a landmark living and learning space. The buildings are being designed to operate emission-free and will exceed UK net zero carbon targets, with a commitment to increase affordable student accommodation provision by 10%. Work is hoped to start on site later this year.
