Summary

Willmott Dixon has secured a contract to overhaul the historic London Fire Brigade HQ, with work set to begin in mid-2027, focusing on modernization while preserving heritage.

Why It Matters

This project represents a significant investment in public infrastructure, aiming to modernize a historic site while creating jobs and enhancing safety. The engagement of SMEs and a construction skills academy highlights a commitment to community development and workforce training.

Key Takeaways

  • Willmott Dixon will modernize the Grade II listed London Fire Brigade HQ.
  • The project includes extensive upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Job creation and SME engagement are key components of the project.
  • Work is set to begin in mid-2027, with temporary relocation of fire station operations.
  • The design will respect the building's heritage while enhancing functionality.

The contractor will take the Grade II listed building through Stage 3 and 4 design ahead of a full overhaul that will bring the 1937 Art Deco landmark back into full use as the Brigade’s HQ for around 840 staff. Plans include full renewal of mechanical, electrical and public health systems, new life safety installations, window replacement, re-roofing and recladding of the 1980s CMC extension. New lifts, partitions, ceilings and finishes will be installed, alongside refurbishment of the appliance bays and basement. The ground to second floor fire station will temporarily vacate during works, due to start mid-2027. Procured via the SCAPE construction framework, the scheme will include SME engagement, job creation and an on-site construction skills academy. Rob Brown, project director at Willmott Dixon Interiors, said: “We’re focused on designing a facility that is fit-for-purpose while respecting the building’s heritage and balancing the infrastructure and flexibility needed to support the Brigade’s vital work for years and generations to come.”
