Why are I-Joists and LVL's the size they are?

I understand that LVL's are 1 3/4 so you can double and triple them to fit a 2x4 or 2x6 wall. But I don't understand why they don't follow nominal lumber sizes for height. Why 9 1/2 and 11 7/8? and then why switch to full 14", 16", 18", and 24" sizes after that? Thanks. submitted by /u/CookieWookie_101 [link] [comments]
